On the highest level sometimes record companies and publishers are at odds with each other, but the age-old record-label-versus-publisher rivalry has diminished as we’ve moved into a digital world. We have to work together to figure out how to promote new services, new ways of distribution, new ways of people listening to music. We’ve had to figure out what are the business models around that; how do creators and copyright holders and content people get paid, how do record labels and publishers get paid, how do the distributors get paid and how much does it cost consumers and how are they going to pay for that?

The reality is, we’ve got new partners. Songwriters have always had artists as partners and they’ve always had record labels as partners; now we’ve got other people as partners and we have to figure out how we’re going to deal with them. Some of them are out to get us and want to erode our rights. Some want to work with us. There’s a whole new group of executives and artists and people in the business who want to face those challenges in new ways and come up with positive solutions. At ASCAP the board is all pretty much on the same page. Paul Williams and John LoFrumento are great leaders, who bring people into alignment with what we’re doing. It’s such a dynamic business with so many new players. I think it’s a matter of keeping up with that.

Film/TV composer Bruce Broughton has been on the board for eight years.
